Keep your friends close...

And your enemies closer. It seems ESRI has yet to learn that particular piece of the wisdom of Sun-tzu, and that's too bad. By excluding "competitors" that are very small compared to the overall marketplace, ESRI is being penny-wise and pound foolish. Sure, open source will steal a few accounts here and there, but the real prize is to co-opt them into your ecosystem, where you can keep an eye on them, a lesson Microsoft has clearly learned.

Or try to buy them out like Oracle.

You should replace ESRI with ESRI EspaƱa (ESRI Spain). The companies are different.

James:

The companies may be different, but the brand is the same. It is the brand that matters most, IMHO.

Paul: I always thought the "enemies" quote was from Vito Andolini, better known as Don Vito Corleone, better known as The Godfather. Thanks for clarifying the quote's true origin.

@James, the number of instances of ESRI (corporate, Redlands) blacklisting are frequent enough that we needn't take too much care parsing who this particular instance originated with -- it's clearly institutionalized. Refractions couldn't get an EDN subscription, until the local ESRI rep pleaded on our behalf (shout outs to SFV!) the threat of the blacklist is used to keep third party ISVs on the reservation. And as with most bullies, pointing out the bullying behavior is itself grounds for further punishment, so the code of silence reigns. The very fact that I hesitate to name the people who have related to me their own instances of being pressured is evidence enough (to me) of the reality of the situation.

I'm not saying ESRI isn't or hasn't been less than supportive of FOSS, but there is zero that ESRI can do to put pressure on ESRI Spain. It is just how the international distributor relationship works. In this case it is 100% ESRI Spain, not ESRI limiting access.

@James, "but there is zero that ESRI can do to put pressure on ESRI Spain. It is just how the international distributor relationship works." -- I don't know how the international distributor relationship works, but I find it very hard to believe that ESRI "proper" has zero control over what ESRI International does.

I am here and all will change soon and all can enjoy the brew and life of home.
KNowing your enemy As you have seen the Cambodians life is simple , poverty and pre- History dictate how they must feel inside. How can they smile each day and go about there duties .Simple, no one else cares or will help. So if you think or feel sorry for there situation then sure be so but also note that what I just wrote is true "No one can help and cares" now that is everywhere .We are friends so be sure I am not saying or including us , Buddies , friends loyal and life long for sure.
