The "Automatic Identification System" or AIS (kind of anti-collision system for ships) is partially or totally turned off in these regions (Gulf of Aden, off Somalia). Additionaly, there are no base stations in these area (AIS is plain VHF), so no positions are reported.

Is it just me or are there no ship location reported around Somalia or the Straits of Malacca both pirate hot spots.
