Slashdot Explains Sexism in Open Source

In the spirit of beer commercials and sports highlight shows, Slashdot's editors blithely follow a post about sexism in open source with, just 45 minutes later, a post on a Marge Simpson spread in Playboy.

Slashdot Effect

Let no one say Slashdot does not know its audience. At least, the audience they have, not the one they're missing out on.

*sigh*

I'm always amazed at how oblivious FOSS (and other computer geeks in general) are to the sexism within their own industry. They seem to think that by virtue of having declared themselves a meritocracy, they have ipso facto removed sexism (I have to admit, I probably fell into that trap when I was younger, too..).

But when you bring up sexism, most of them are quite simply in denial about that whole thing...

I'm really disappointed that Slashdot did not include a picture of Marge in her police uniform and Homer prancing around in Marge's underwear noting "Its just a comfort thing you understand."

Well let me speak for the small minority (both female and non-white and also who has happened to be accused of being sexist against my own sex and racist against my own race (whatever race that maybe and who has had to run for my life in a pure italian mafia neighborhood) when I say FOSS would have much fewer women than any other industry even if it could achieve this pure non-sexist nirvana it seeks.

For example my parents being as kind hearted as they are and good-intentioned as they are and probably less sexist than most parents, are "Sexist pigs". Why does my mother insist on inviting me to these crocheting and knitting things -- has she not realized after 30 years that I hate these activities. why doesn't she torture my brother instead with these invitations. Why would my father think I prefer a stupid doll over a train set.

So the point is genetically we may not be all that different (or maybe we are), but we certainly become different by the time we reach the point where we would care about FOSS (giving free programming time for the good of ?). Why isn't anyone screaming about why there aren't more men in bake-offs and the like.

Whatever your occupation is, whoever you are.. the idea of sexism will always affect you 'cause you are a human being.
